Chapter Eight

Thank goodness she’d packed a couple of sundresses, Kendall thought, as she rummaged through her wardrobe the next morning and took out a shift dress in delicate eggshell blue. It was cut in a simple style, but the colour suited her.

She decided to wear her swimwear underneath to save the embarrassment of trying to change on the beach and slipped the sarong into her bag as a cover-up. She added a beach towel and what was left of her sun cream to the bag. Once she’d slipped on a pair of almost-flat sandals, she was all set.

Kendall arrived downstairs for breakfast before Jake and ordered fresh orange juice while she waited for him.

It was unusual for him to be late. Punctuality was one of his strong points.

Perhaps he’d changed his mind and wasn’t going to turn up.

She suddenly realised just how much she’d been looking forward to spending another day in his company.

But, no, he wouldn’t stand her up. She’s seen enough of how he handled people these last couple of days to know that if he’d changed his mind, he’d come and tell her himself.

Then she caught her breath as she saw him strolling towards her wearing a pair of washed– out board shorts and a tight white vest. She saw that several other female hotel guests were staring admirably at him, and she felt a surge of pride as he sat down beside her.

‘Sorry I’m late,’ he apologised, flashing a devastating smile that turned her bones to jelly. ‘I had a few calls to answer.’

‘Not problems at work, I hope?’ she asked, hoping another crisis hadn’t come up.

‘Just mundane stuff to do with the U.S. office.’

‘U.S. office? Does your empire spread all over the world?’ She was only half teasing

‘Not quite, but I’m working on it.’ His eyes twinkled back at her.

After a breakfast of scrambled egg on toast for Kendall and a full fry-up for Jake, they set off in the sports car.

‘How many cars do you have?’ she asked as they drove off.

‘Four. Two over here and two in England,’ he told her. ‘But this is my favourite.’

‘I’m not surprised. It’s lovely. Especially on a day like today.’

She loved the feel of the sun on her face and the breeze in her hair as they drove along the motorway.

Before long, Jake turned off along a side road then drove down a dirt track that led to the beach.

The cove was breath taking. Kendall gazed in awe at the golden sand and deep blue Mediterranean Sea.

‘It’s beautiful,’ she said softly.

‘I discovered it a couple of years ago,’ Jake told her. ‘It’s a bit off the beaten track, so it doesn’t get as crowded as the tourist beaches, but it’s not too far away, either.’

He parked the car and took a picnic basket out of the boot

‘We’ll have to walk down a flight of steps,’ he told her. ‘You might find it difficult in those sandals.’

‘No problem.’

She slipped them off and placed them on top of her beach bag.
